dreams of the millions who voted for him. excitement, wonder and passion electrified the packed crowd on the national mall. >> i stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our an seft ors. >> the mood in washington that night ecstatic as the new president and his beautiful wife celebrated a victory for the ages. the new administration was the toast of the town. but storm clouds were hovering. a recession and financial crisis gripped the country with unemployment soon to hit 10%. a bailout of some financial giants and massive stimulus plan occupied his early days in office. but against heavy opposition,

the president did push health care reform through congress. a big win for him. >> the bill i'm signing will set in motion reforms that generations of americans have fought for and marched for and hung erred to see. >> if health care 40 years from now if americans say that we consider that as vital and successful as medicare or social security that probably will be the most lasting accomplishment of barack obama. >> but the health care fight came at a cost with republicans winning back the house a year later and vowing to battle the president at every turn. >> our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny president obama a second term. >> as promised, president obama ended the war in iraq and slowly began to wind down the war in afghanistan. then the biggest moment of his presidency. >> tonight i can report to the american people and to the world

that the united states has conducted an operation that killed osama bin laden, the leader of al qaeda. >> the nation celebrating as one. but the unity and the president's promise to bring democrats and republicans in washington together didn't last long. >> much of what he said recently essentially suggests that not that he's given up but that he has come to realize that that mountain is a lot higher than he expected it to be. >> the staaled economy another mountain to climb for the president. >> the overwhelming problem the economy is one that president obama has said is still undone. that's his biggest challenge for term two. >> perhaps a sign of the times, the president's second inaugural is much smaller. 10 inaugural balls four years ago. only two this time. and tomorrow what could be his last big chance to tell americans from coast to coast what he can do for them over the next four years.

>> of course there are plenty of people around here not excited about this inauguration. a lot of republicans are skipping town. neither former president george w. bush nor his father, who was recently hospitalized with health problems, plan to attend. for more on the inauguration and president obama's second term, let's bring in david gregory, moderator of "meet the press". good to see you. >> good morning, lester. >> tomorrow the president will deliver his inaugural address. the first time around we typically hear optimistic, lofty ideal speeches. there is the reality after four years, what would you expect him to say tomorrow. >> i think he wants to talk about restoration of the american economy. back to his first inaugural address how crisis-laden the times were. it was defining his initial work in his first term. of course it came to dominate his first term. now he will talk about restoration. the idea of sunnier days ahead and how the united states reaches those goals.

he does that tkpwepbsz a back drop of such a divided washington. a lot of republicans are not in town or not attending. they don't want to challenge him in any way during his inauguration. nevertheless, whether it's guns or the debt, it's still a toxic atmosphere the president faces going into a separate term. >> he was a guy who came to town and talked about reaching across the aisle, working together. where you expect one who will flex his muscles more willingly against the opposition? >> yeah, i think we're seeing that. you know, i don't know that he's done trying to reach out. i think he's hardened his positions. he so believes republicans have the wrong approach, many are obstruction euftds. he wanteds to try to chart a course that either confuses them are can override them. you see it already in his stance on the debt ceiling.

party. two great hall of famers in baseball have passed away. stan the man played 22 seasons with the cardinals. .331 lifetime batting average and over 3,600 hits. he was a first ballad hall of famer and was awarded the presidential medal of freedom. he died of natural causes saturday at the age of 92. fiery manager earl weaver also died saturday. famous for a spirited verbal spats with umpires, we'll call them spirited, led the orioles to four pen ants in 17 seasons. he was 82 years old. and finally, you know that expression, yeah, you'll get a puppy when you get a million likes on facebook. for the cordell kids it was quite the challenge. ryan cordell challenged his kids, got a million likes on facebook. then and only then can you maybe get a puppy. it only took six hour from the

good morning. looking live from the camera in emoryville toward the bay bridge this morning. the seas quiet now, but will be abuzz as 49ers fans get out and get ready for the game. the forecast, probably not good for being indoors watching football. >> it's going to want to make you watch outdoors. temperatures later on, mid to upper 60s. we've got the dry air in place, no clouds. so 30s and upper 20s around the north bay. the radar quite dry. we don't have any clouds. no rain drops. if you're heading out to the coast unless you're a professional surfer out at maverick's, we've got breakers coming in 15 to 20 feet. high surf advisory up and down the coast today until 4:00. mostly sunny skies. dry weather today. and should see 70s around santa cruz today. still january, just not for today. nice day out op the coast.

we'll stay dry to kick off the work week. next weekend looks like we'll see a chance of rain dropping in and cooler temperatures as well. >> thank you very much, rob. happening now, tens of thousands of people are on their way to half moon bay to catch the world's best surfers in action. the first heat of maverick's surf contest is set to start in just about 90 minutes off the coast of half moon bay. organizers are predicting monster waves. so is rob. in fact, high surf created some trouble for surfers at a number of bay area beaches yesterday. the coast guard helped to -- helped several surfers to safety who got caught in a powerful rip current at both ocean beach in san francisco and dillon beach in marin. nobody was hurt. this is just what professionals have traveled from all around the world to experience the maverick's. >> the surfers will have a challenging condition because of the long period in the offshore winds. it will throw out really quick. it's going to be a challenge for

the guys. >> the high surf is expected to continue at bay area beaches today. and we could see waves up to 30 feet. so, the coast guard is warning all beachgoers to be cautious of the water, even if you're on the shore. coming up on "today in the bay," we'll tell you the names of the big named surfers who dropped out of the competition. game day for the san francisco 49ers. but will the recent sexual assault allegations against michael crabtree be a distraction. he is expected to play against the falcons today. yesterday his lawyer released a statement saying michael fully cooperated with the inspectors and will continue to do so throughout the investigation, out of respect and integrity for the process we have no further comment at this time. coming up at 7:00 on "today in the bay," we'll take you back to washington, d.c. where the president will officially be sworn into office at 8:55 this morning. we're going to talk with larry

if you thought being a kid was tough, imagine doing it with, growing up with the world watching your every move. we have seen sasha and malia obama grow up before our eyes. malia is now a high school freshman. sasha in her first year in middle school. kristen welker is here with a look at the first daughters growing up. good morning. >> good morning. amazing how much they have grown. from the start, the president and first lady has asked that the media respect malia and sasha's privacy. a request that has been largely followed but they are older now and that will bring new challenges for them and their families. >> when malia and sasha stepped on the stage, it was hard not to marvel at how much they have matured. >> i was struck seeing how much they have grown from four years ago. >> reporter: they were so young when they moved into the white

house. sasha just 7 and malia 10. now, at 11 and 14, even the president recently remarked at how much has changed for them and for him. >> now that my girls are getting older, they don't want to spend that much time with me anyway. i'm getting kind of lonely in this big house. >> from the start, they worked hard to shield the first daughters from a harsh spotlight, the public only catching occasional glimpses, grabbing shave ice with their parents in hawaii, reading books to kids during the annual easter egg roll. >> it was still hot. >> the end. >> and celebrating the traditions of the holiday. but they were pulled into the political arena last week in a biting television ad from the national rifle association. >> are the president's kids more important than yours? >> reporter: enforcing a zone of privacy could be more challenging in this second term. >> it needs to stay in place now more than ever, where the zone of privacy has shrunk even more and will continue to shrink because of social media.

the spokesperson. behind the scenes, there has been a lot of back and forth over the years about how involved she would be in his political life, et cetera, et cetera. she makes this video which is big news in the political world. that's not what really makes the headlines. her new bangs make the headlines. there are even headlines that say things like, see michelle obama's new banks in motion. her popularity from a fashion sense is a huge asset. on the other hand, it can unintentionally overshadow the work she is trying to do at first lady. >> i think the sort of fun that people had with her bangs, it is the sore of rather intense weekend so the bangs add something. what i liked about her changing her hair around her 49th birthday is that you could get her to think, i'm 50 next year, the issues regular women have, i'm going to change it up with some new bangs. you see the extraordinary fuss
